WHEN GOD IS SPEAKING
It is rare, but God does speak audibly. However, most times His voice speaks to our conscience, our spirit. For it is Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirit (Rom 9:1; 8:16), as it is His voice gives us an answer of inner peace (2 Tim. 1:7). An inner peace that isn’t based on logic, tradition or emotion but on an inner knowing it is right or no peace telling us it is wrong (Gen 41:16, Ps 85:8; Phil 4:6-8; Col 3:15, 1 John 2:27). His peace validates the word He speaks. Many times the Lord will answer the root of the question, the motivation for the request, not necessarily what is being asked (1 Chr. 28:9; Luke 1:18-20, 34-35). So check the motive.

IF YOU CANNOT HEAR GOD CLEARLY
Fast – Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline that helps suppress the noise of the flesh so your spirit can hear God more clearly (Luke 5:35; Gal. 6:7–8; Acts 13:2; Acts 14:23). Fasting is the abstaining from food while drinking water for a period of time (Ezra 8:21). In some cases, fasting involves abstaining from both food and water (Ezra 10:6).
Be Still (Psa. 46:10) – Sometimes we are so busy with our phones, media or family that we don’t put oursselves into a position to hear. Hearing starts when we have nothing more to say and we wait. Wait could be on the knees or when walking about or doing something arbitary. Listen for the still small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12)
12 KEY BARRIERS TO ANSWERED PRAYER?
- Turning away from hearing God’s law therefore even their prayer is an abomination (Prov 28:9; Prov 1:28-29).
- Since you have repented of your thoughts and actions that have gone against God’s word; put away the evil doings (Isa 1:16).
- Stop pride by acknowledging what you rely on rather than on God, as His help (Ps. 91:14-16; Heb. 11:6; Ex. 3:14; James 4:7-8; Prov. 28:9; 2 Chr. 7:14-16).
- Being worldly and not focused on God’s Kingdom (James 4:3; Matt. 6:20-33).
- Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is speaking against the power of God (miracles) done through Yeshua (Matt 12:31-32).
- Refusing to forgive others (Mark 11:25-26; Matt. 6:15).
- Ignoring the needs of our family (1 Tim. 5:8).
- Not praying from a sincere and believing heart (Jer. 29:11-14; Isa. 29:13; Mark 11:22-23).
- Failing to love fellow believers (John 15:7-12; 1 John 3:20-24; Matt. 5:23-24).
- Avoiding good works looks like not seeking justice, not rebuking oppression, not defending the fatherless, not pleading for the widow (Isa. 1:15-19).
- Shutting our eyes and ears to the poor (Prov. 21:13; Zech. 7:10-13).
- Husbands dishonoring their wives (1 Pet 3:7) or wives refusing to submit to their husbands, as unto the Lord (1 Cor 11:10; Eph 5:22).
12 THINGS TO DO TO ENSURE BREAK THROUGH PRAYER?
- Spend time in His presence, listening and watching what He is doing (John 5:19). Be conscious of Him always.
- Be humble by not leaning on your understanding but acknowledging the Lord (Prov. 3:5).
- Seek His Kingdom expansion first, not your own, and live His righteous (Matt. 6:33).
- Pray in Tongues (Rom. 8:26; 1 Cor. 14:15, 17; Jude 1:20).
- Choose not to Fear but be transparent before your Heavenly Father by casting all your cares on Him (Isa 50:7; 1 Peter 5:6-8).
- Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow (Is. 1:17).
- Lean on the Word of God by matching a promise in Scripture with your need, and ensure you meet the conditions (Ps 119:105), then set your case before Lord (Isa 1:18-19).
- Give your Heavenly Father the imaginary picture by describing what it looks like and how it will benefit His Kingdom (Matt. 18:19-20). If you don’t form a vision, the enemy may give you one—so write it down clearly. Then ask Him what is His picture is for this situation and how should you be involved in accomplishing it.
- Remember what God has already done for you, and live a life of gratitude (Phil. 4:4).
- Be persistent and relentless such as: Ask daily or maybe ask with your spouse (Luk 18:1-8). And therefore remember that without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him (Heb 11:6).
- Let pain or immense gratitude be the trigger to pray with power, that is, praying with your whole heart (Gen. 27:33-35; Jer 29:12-13).
- When you pray believe that you have received them (Mark 11:22-24).
WHAT IS FASTING?
Fasting is abstaining from food (or from both food and water) for a period of time in order to humble oneself before God (Psa 35:13; Ezra 8:21; Joel 2:12). A fast is a minimum of 1 day (Judges 20:26), but it is commonly 36 hours or longer (1 Sam 31:13).
THE OBJECTIVE OF A FAST
The objective of fasting is to hear God more clearly and to strengthen the spirit over the flesh (Ps. 35:13; Gal. 5:17). Since, fasting without repentance and obedience is empty and powerless (Isa 58:3–5; Jer 14:10–12). The power of the fast is in the struggle – 17 minute message.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FASTS
Normal Fast: No food; water only (Matt. 4:2). This is the standard fast in Scripture (Luke 4:2). It is generally used for: Clarity and direction (Acts 13:2), Preparing for ministry (Matt 4:2), Breakthrough and deliverance (Matt 17:21; Mark 9:29). Early Church Example (Didache, 2nd Century): “Before the baptism, let the baptizer fast, and the one to be baptized, and whatever others can; but you shall order the one to be baptized to fast one or two days before.” (Didache 7)
Absolute Fast: No food and no water, usually for a shorter time (such as 3 days, Acts 9:9), unless God is sustaining you as He did with Moses (Deut 9:9). This is generally used for: Urgent requests (Esth 4:16); Radical turning points and life change (Acts 9:9).

HOW TO FAST
BEFORE THE FAST
- Choose the type of fast, be clear about why you are fasting, and set the timeframe, then keep it. Therefore do not make vows you will not honor (Eccl 5:4–5), do not overpromise and underdeliver.
- Do not fast to feel spiritual or superior (Luke 18:11–14). Fasting is not about bragging or proving sacrifice, but about humbling yourself, suppressing the flesh, and turning to God through repentance and obedience (Ps. 51:16–17; Matt. 6:16–18; Joel 2:12).
- Keep in mind: “No food” means no substitutes (no teas, juice, smoothies, medication) — trust in God to sustain you.
DURING THE FAST
(Based on experience)
- Set your mind on things above, and remember the reward is hearing your heavenly Father more clearly (Col. 3:1–3; James 4:8).
- Set aside at least 1 hour daily of isolated time with God—alone, door shut, no distractions, and no multitasking (Matt. 6:6).
- Take a notebook and write down what the Lord shows you, along with the next steps (Hab. 2:2).
- Read Scripture daily—at least 3 chapters a day (especially the Gospels) and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand it (John 14:26; 1 Cor 2:12–14).
- Pray continually (1 Thess. 5:17). Therefore pray in tongues out loud (Jude 1:20; Rom 8:26) and commune with God in your heart throughout the day (Ps 16:7; Phil 4:6).
- Go for walks with the Lord. Talk to Him about His creation and His desires (Gen. 5:24; Ps. 19:1).
- Expect spiritual warfare and temptation (Luke 4:2; Gal 5:17; Rom 7:23) therefore know that the flesh will fight back: headaches, cravings, emotional highs and lows, irritability, and self-pity (Ps 109:24). The flesh will even lie to you with statements like: “This isn’t healthy”, “Just one bite”, “What if something happens?” “You can compensate later.” Use these moments as triggers to pray, give thanks, and take thoughts captive (2 Cor. 10:5; Gal. 5:16). Your heavenly Father sees in secret (Matt. 6:18) so lean on God(Isa. 40:31), as the power of the fast is in the struggle.
- Remember: breakthrough, peace, and clarity often come after the fast (Isa. 58:8–11).
SOME THINGS NOT TO DO
- Do not boast, debate, argue, judge, or draw attention to yourself (Isa. 58:3–4, 9; Matt. 6:16–18).
- Avoid strife, criticism, and corrupt speech (Eph. 4:29).
- Cut off the news, games, and anything for self gratification and focus on what is good (Phil. 4:8; Rom. 13:14).
- Do not fixate on when the fast ends—stay God-focused (Col. 3:1–2).
- For those who are married: abstain from sex during the fast, but come back together afterward (1 Cor. 7:5).
AFTER THE FAST
- Be Aware: The flesh will try to take the reins back from your spirit so you may notice animal-like behaviors surfacing—both spiritually and physically.
- Spiritually: Aggression, entitlement, superiority because of the fast, or justification of sin (Phil 3:19; Jude 1:10). Therefore the flesh will demand reward and indulgence using logic and entitlement.
- Physically: Loss of restraint, gluttony, cravings for junk food, sweets, and sodas therefore use restraint for at least 24 hours after the fast.
- Overcoming the Flesh After the Fast: There are 3 ways to overcome the flesh:
- Speak against it when the thoughts arise in Yeshua’s name (2 Cor. 10:5). Do not only fight it silently in your mind—use your voice (Prov. 18:21).
- Walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16) by: being thankful to the Lord (1 Thess. 5:18), setting your mind on things above (Col. 3:1–3), speaking in tongues (Jude 1:20; Rom. 8:26),
- Focus on doing the next steps you wrote down during the fast—especially those related to the Kingdom of God (Matt. 6:33).
