UNDERSTANDING THE REAL ENEMY – SATAN
INTRODUCTION
What are the primary motives of the Devil and Demons? It is to steal, kill, and destroy (Jn 10:10; 8:44; Job 1:14–19).
Does God allow the Devil into our lives? God gives us free will; however our wrong choices open the door to the devil (1 Cor 5:1–5; 1 Pet 5:7–9; Jas 4:6–7; 1 Jn 3:8–10; Acts 13:10; Rev 2:9).
How does the Devil work? He works directly and through his kingdom, for instance, fallen angels (Rev 12:4; Jude 1:6), demons (Lk 11:19–20), and the lost (Rev 2:10; Jn 8:44; 2 Tim 2:26). Their objective is to influence, deceive, tempt, and hinder (Rev 12:9; 1 Th 2:18; 2 Cor 11:3). Therefore they have the ability to influence the hearts (motivations, passions) and speak into the mind (thoughts, understanding) (1 Chr 21:1; Lk 8:12, 35; Mk 4:15; Jn 13:2; Acts 5:3; 1 Pet 5:8; 2 Cor 4:3–4; 1 Th 3:5).
Can they know our thoughts? No. If Satan could, he would have revealed Pharaoh’s and Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams through his magicians (Gen 41; Dan 2:29). However, Scripture shows only God knows our thoughts (Ps 94:11; Rev 2:23). All Satan and his demons can do is interpret our thoughts by observing us.
Can people be possessed by demons? They can enter, attach, or harass (be demonized), but cannot fully possess a person, as the human will remains stronger (Lk 8:27–30; Mk 9:25).
HOW THEY GAIN ACCESS
They gain access through the root of pride (Job 41:34) which is rebellion against God, His promises, and unbelief (Heb 3:13–19). For that reason, the evidence is the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and self-reliance (1 Jn 2:15–16). Therefore the sins would be:
- Sacrificing children (Abortion) (Ps. 106:36–37)
- Pride and Rebellion to God (Jam 4:6–7; 1 Sam. 15:23)
- Idolatry or Serving Other Gods (Exod. 20:3–5; Ps. 106:36–37)
- Pride and Rebellion Against God’s Authority (Jas. 4:6–7; 1 Sam. 15:23)
- Hatred and Bitterness (1 Jn. 3:15; Heb. 12:15)
- Envy and Jealousy (Jas. 3:14–16)
- Greed or Love of Money (1 Tim. 6:9–10; Matt. 6:24)
- Drunkenness or Substance Abuse (Gal. 5:19–21; Prov. 23:31–33)
- Unconfessed Sin or Hypocrisy (Prov. 28:13; Acts 8:21–23)
- Occult Objects or Cursed Items in the Home (Deut. 7:25–26; Acts 19:19)
- Corrupt Music, Entertainment, or Symbols Glorifying Darkness (Eph. 5:11; Ps. 101:3)
- Broken Covenants (especially marriage vows) (Mal. 2:14–16)
- Harboring Unbelief or Doubt Toward God (Heb. 3:12–13; Rom. 14:23)
- Generational Curses or Ancestral Sin Patterns (Exod. 20:5; Lam. 5:7)
- Careless Words, Negative Declarations, or Ungodly Vows (Prov. 18:21; Matt. 12:36–37; Num. 30:2; Eccl. 5:4–6)
These sins affect not only the individual but also those under their authority or influence (Judg 8:27).

HOW TO IDENTIFY IF DEMONS ARE INVOLVED
How can we tell if a person is demonized or acting in the flesh? Test the spirits (1 Jn 4:1; Heb 4:12) and discern (1 Cor 12:10; Acts 16:18). If one has a continued struggle, unable to break and we know it is bad, then often times this indicates that there are demonic influences. Therefore here are a list of examples of spirits in Scripture to help identify:
- Spirit of Jealousy (Num 5:11–14; Prov 6:34–35) — murder, rage, suspicion, competition, revenge.
- Lying Spirit (2 Chr 18:22; Jer 23:14–16; Ezek 12:24) — deceit, superstition, falsehood.
- Familiar Spirit (1 Sam 28:7) — occult practices, astrology.
- Perverse Spirit (Isa 19:14; Prov 14:12) — lust, fornication, twisted thoughts, pornography, hatred of God.
- Spirit of Heaviness (Isa 61:3; 1 Sam 16:14) — grief, depression, rejection, self-pity, gluttony.
- Spirit of Whoredom (Hos 4:12; 5:4) — prostitution, idolatry.
- Spirit of Infirmity (Lk 13:11) — sickness and disease.
- Deaf and Dumb Spirit (Mk 9:17–25; Matt 17) — epilepsy, self-destruction, muteness.
- Spirit of Fear (2 Tim 1:7) — torment, worry, phobias, inferiority.
- Spirit of Pride (Prov 16:18) — arrogance, gossip, self-righteousness, stubbornness.
- Spirit of Bondage (Rom 8:15) — bitterness, addiction, abandonment.
- Spirit of Antichrist/Error (1 Jn 4:3, 6) — denial of Christ’s incarnation, death, resurrection, and power.
- Spirit of Ill Will (Judg 9:23) — hatred without cause.
- Spirit of Stupor (Rom 11:8; Isa 29:10; 6:9–10) — spiritual blindness and dullness.
HOW TO CAST OUT DEMONS
Follow the Disciples example: “In the name of Yeshua (Jesus), you spirit of fear (or evil spirit), I command you to come out and go!” Do not rely on a formula or focus on the spirit’s name—the power lies in who backs you (1 Jn 4:4) rather than the way you do it.
Warning when casting out demons: Deliverance should be done by a believer who knows their authority in Christ, they have signs (Acts 19; 1 Jn 4:4; Matt 16:18–19). Therefore laying on of hands is not required—simply command them to leave (Mk 16:17).
Anointed Children of God can cast out Demons (Mk 16:17): Therefore you could receive the following prayer for yourself – listen and interact (do what they say as if you were there):
- Deliverance 1 (26 minutes of power – compilation of mighty men of God praying for the masses. 1. Derek Prince. 2. Gabriel Fernandes. 3. TB Joshua. 4. Benny Hinn. 5. Curry Blake. 6. Reinhard Bonnke. 7. Sid Roth.)
- Deliverance 2 (31 minutes of power – compilation of mighty children of God praying for people. 1. Curry Blake. 2. Kathryn Kuhlman. 3. Derek Prince. 4. TB Joshua. 5. Benny Hinn. 6. Chris Oyakhilome. 7. Reinhard Bonnke.)
How do demons leave? Sometimes there are physical manifestations such as tears, coughing, shaking, vomiting, yawning, foaming etc. (Mk 9:20). The end result is peace, clarity, freedom, and healing (Lk 8:35) – the person feels lighter.
Can they return? Yes, if a person does not align with God’s ways (Lk 11:24–26; Jn 5:14). Therefore it is important that those who have not received Yeshua should surrender to Yeshua (Acts 2:39), allowing the Holy Spirit to dwell within to help them overcome (1 Jn 4:4).
DELIVERANCE – HOW TO CLOSE DEMONIC DOORS IN ONE’S LIFE
1. Break Generational Curses
What is it? Generational Curses are sin that affects descendants, also seen as Ancestral sin patterns (Deu. 23:2; Exo. 20:5; Num. 14:18, Lam. 5:7)
How? Before God, renounce your natural lineage from your father and mother, and declare that you are of Yeshua’s lineage (Isa. 53:8; Phi. 3:4–7; Luk. 1:59–63).
2. Break Traumatic Experiences
What is it? Trauma of a specific event involving feelings of being alone, scared, hopeless, rejection, fearful, hateful, or facing death (1Co. 13:4–7,13; Eph. 6:12–18). These experiences are generally accompanied by shaking or tears. Identify the worst traumatic experiences.
How? Using your imagination, as the language of the heart is based on a memory. Therefore recall the event and ask Yeshua, “The Scripture says you are everywhere, therefore where were You in this situation?” He will be somewhere close to you. See Him there, then ask, “What would You say to me?” (Gen. 15; Jer. 1; Joh. 21; Rom. 4:17–22). Some possible responses: “They don’t know any better; please forgive them.” As they may have experienced something similar therefore forgive them by saying, “Lord, I forgive … for doing this or that to me.”
Another response the Lord may give: “It is not your fault; the enemy used you.” Hence, you ask the Lord for forgiveness and then you need to forgive yourself by saying, “Lord, please forgive me.” Then place your hands on your legs, look at yourself, and say in the third person, “(Your name), I forgive you.”
3. Break Unforgiveness
What is it? All people toward whom you harbor unforgiveness (2 Cor 2:10–11; Matt 18:34–35). The language of the heart is pictures, not words, so forgiveness mu\st come from the heart.
How? Close your eyes, then picture them coming to the door of your house and knocking. You open the door and see them. Then put the words you want them to say in their mouth and say them aloud, “Please forgive me for being … I know you did your best, and you helped me …” But ensure at the end you respond with, “I forgive you”.
4. Break Ungodly Soul Ties
What is it? Soul connections that go against God’s will—sex outside of marriage therefore opposite to what a Husband and Wife have (1 Cor. 7:14; Gen. 2:24), pornography / seductive books (1 Co. 6:16; Mat. 5:28), inappropriate friendship bonds (opposite to David’s friendship 1 Sam. 18:1), a verbal or written contract (Gen. 15:18), a blood pact.
How? Ask the Lord to reveal ungodly soul ties. For every person you see in your imagination (do not question it based on your understanding). For example, “Lord, I cut off the ungodly soul tie with …” and name the person the Lord has revealed. “Forgive me for watching and enjoying pornography when I know it is wrong, it is adultery, please forgive me.”
5. Break Links to the Occult
What is it? Were or being involved in the occult practices; psychics, ouija board, palm readers, astrology, horror films, Sorcery, Channeling, Tarot Cards, Necromancy, Tea readers, Halloween, Yoga, New Age, Crystals, etc. (Deut. 18:10-12; Lev. 5:17; Prov. 14:12-16; 1 Cor 10:20–22;Isa. 8:19; 1 Chr. 10:13–14)
How? Acknowledge that they are wrong and ask the Lord to forgive you, for example, “Lord forgive me for my ignorance in participating Halloween and watching Horror films. I know it is wrong. Cleanse me by the blood of your son Yeshua.”
6. Break Vows
What is it? Careless Words, Negative Declarations, or Ungodly Vows (Prov. 18:21; Matt. 12:36–37; Num. 30:2; Eccl. 5:4–6;Mat. 5:33–37)
How? Repent for saying it and then change the confession. For example: If the vow is “I would die for this or that person,” say, “Heavenly Father, forgive me for making this vow. Forgive me for giving something that belongs to You. My life is Yours only.” OR “When the flu comes around, I always get it.” → “Heavenly Father, forgive me for speaking this over myself. I break agreement with sickness and declare that by Yeshua’s stripes I am healed (Isa. 53:5; Isa. 54:17). My body belongs to You, and I receive Your protection and health.” OR “I’ll never be like my father/mother.” → “Heavenly Father, forgive me for making a vow in judgment. I release my parents to You and receive freedom to be who You created me to be.”
Here are other examples of soul-binding vows:
- “I will never forgive them.” → “Father, forgive me for making a vow of unforgiveness. I choose to forgive as You have forgiven me. I release this person into Your hands.”
- “I’ll never love again.” → “Lord, forgive me for closing my heart. Heal me and restore my ability to love as You love.”
- “I will always be alone.” → “Father, forgive me for agreeing with loneliness. I break this vow and receive Your promise that You will never leave me nor forsake me.”
- “I’ll never trust anyone again.” → “Lord, forgive me for making a vow rooted in fear and pain. I choose to trust You first and allow You to guide me in trusting others.”
- “If I fail, I’ll never try again.” → “Father, forgive me for limiting what You can do through me. I renounce this vow and receive Your strength to persevere.”
- “I have to be perfect or no one will love me.” → “Lord, forgive me for believing this lie. I renounce this vow and receive Your unconditional love that casts out fear.”
7. Break Curses Spoken Over Your Life
What is it? Curses that have been spoken over your life—by yourself or others—that you accepted by confessing or believing them.
How? Reverse it by speak blessings over your life, thereby breaking the curses, for there is death and life in the power of the tongue (Pro. 18:21; Isa. 54:17). In the name of Yeshua, declare: “I am a child of God. I love myself because I love what God loves.” If you are a man, say all those that are applicable to a position (father, brother etc) not how you have behaved: “I am a good husband, a good father, a good brother, a good friend, a good provider.” Similar to the man, if you are a woman, say: “I am a good wife, a good mother, a good sister, a good friend. I am beautiful, and I am a good helper.” If any statements are difficult to say because you don’t fully believe them, repeat them several times until truth replaces doubt.
8. Break Curses
What is it? Sins that you may or may not be aware of that you need to repent for.
How? Review this list below and if you have done any of these repent, “Heavenly Father, I know that this …. is a sin. I will stop or try to stop it, please help me. Please forgive me in Yeshua’s name.

9. Cast Out Demons
What is it? Removing demonic spirits from your life.
How? Say: “In the name of Yeshua, you spirit of (name) come out!” If you feel something—chills, goosebumps, electricity, or any unusual sensation—remember the name of the spirit and repeat until you experience peace. Here is a list of examples of names to call out.

- Deliverance 1 (26 minutes of power – compilation of mighty men of God praying for the masses. 1. Derek Prince. 2. Gabriel Fernandes. 3. TB Joshua. 4. Benny Hinn. 5. Curry Blake. 6. Reinhard Bonnke. 7. Sid Roth.)
- Deliverance 2 (31 minutes of power – compilation of mighty children of God praying for people. 1. Curry Blake. 2. Kathryn Kuhlman. 3. Derek Prince. 4. TB Joshua. 5. Benny Hinn. 6. Chris Oyakhilome. 7. Reinhard Bonnke.)
10. THANK YESHUA FOR THE FREEDOM
What is it? Be grateful for the freedom you received, it is not by you works you are free but by what Yeshua did for you. He suffered that you may walk in freedom.
How? By giving thanks out-loud, telling others what He has done for you, by praising Him and by taking of the Lord’s Supper.
STAY FREE BY DYING TO SELF
What is it? When demons come back they see if the house is swept and clean. In other words, there is no meaningful activity so they get others more wicked than themselves to come. Therefore ensure you are active for the Kingdom of God.
How? Ensure you are busy for the Kingdom of God vs using your freedom to be idle. Some examples can be found here. Or if you want to discover what God has designed you for, here are some soul searching questions to help.
Therefore live in Christ, testify of Him, forgive others, and stay alert to Satan’s schemes (2 Cor 2:11; Rev 12:11). Submit to God and resist the devil, and he will flee (Jas 4:7). Be intimate with God by being aware of His presence, pray continually, fast regularly, and watch what the Lord is doing (Lk 22:46; Jas 4:8). Also remember not to fear demons, not be demon conscious but be God conscious. Think of demons as a mosquito, when they land on you or near you, swat them and continue doing what the Lord has for you.
